Journey of taste in Canavese ... on the Royal Route of Turin wines
3 days/2 nights minimum 2 people
- DAY 1
DAY 1
Our journey through the landscapes and scents of the Canavese starts from Piverone (TO), a small historic village nestled in the hills of the Serra Morenica di Ivrea. It seems to be in a painting and the view is lost at 360 degrees: on one side the vineyards, on the other the Viverone Lake. You can’t help but start with a good glass of wine: first stop at the Cantina Sociale della Serra with a visit to the company and tasting of the precious Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG and other Canavese wines
Lunch at the Cascina Gaio farmhouse in Piverone, a green oasis where you can savor the typical recipes of the area, prepared based on the farm’s products, strictly organically grown.
In the afternoon we regenerate the body and mind with a pleasant walk along “The path of the Gesiun”: a low difficulty itinerary, of about 6 km, which retraces a stretch of the famous Via Francigena. Destination of the walk, with a strong panoramic impact, will be the remains of the ancient Romanesque church, nicknamed the “Gesiun”: the building, dating back to the 11th century and unique in its kind, is striking for its tiny size and traces of frescoes preserved in the nave, although the church has long been without a roof. From here the gaze opens up on the morainic amphitheater of Ivrea, on Lake Viverone and on the Canavese Alps, to recognize the profile of the Monviso on the clearest days.
We continue with a visit to the historic center of Piverone, famous for its medieval tower – gate; followed by entry to the Agricultural – Ethnographic Museum “La Steiva”, dedicated to peasant life and local traditions of the past. In the rooms the most characteristic rural environments and trades have been reconstructed, from the kitchen to the bedroom, from hemp weaving to carpentry.
The afternoon ends at the wine producer “La Masera” for a visit to the cellar and an Aperitif based on the company’s labels, to which the guided tasting will be dedicated, in combination with some local specialties. A philosophy made of love for the territory, tenacity and dedication that breathes in La Masera, which has led to the birth of excellent quality wines, in particular the Erbaluce Autoctono D.O.C.G., also in the Passito and Spumante Millesimato versions.
Dinner at Agriturismo Cascina Gaio Piverone and transfer to San Giusto Canavese for overnight stay at B&B La Gerbolina in San Giusto Canavese
- DAY 2
This second day begins with a visit to two important wine producers in the area. First stop at the Cantine Massoglia di Agliè, with visit and tasting; the company is located in the hilly area of the Aosta Valley, very suited to the cultivation of Erbaluce and Barbera. Afterwards, transfer to the Cieck Farm in San Giorgio Canavese with a Light Lunch based on the wines from the cellar paired with local products.
In the afternoon we move to Borgofranco d’Ivrea to discover the famous Balmetti, or “Balmit” historic natural cellars leaning against the morainic rocks created for the preservation of meats, cheeses and wine. Their peculiarity is to keep both the humidity rate and the temperature of 7/8 ° C constant in all seasons. The birth of the Balmits is linked to the cultivation of vines, attested in the area since the 12th century and practiced on the characteristic artificial terraces that shape the slopes more sheltered from the cold winds of the valley. Here the Borgofranco winemakers still produce white wine dël balmèt, mainly from Erbaluce grapes, and red wine dël balmèt, a blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Neyret and Vernassa.
The day ends at the Balmetti with a typical Marenda sinoira, rich buffet snack based on Canavese wines and products.
Overnight at the B & B L’albero maestro in Borgofranco, a familiar and welcoming place immersed in the tranquility of nature. In addition to modern and carefully furnished rooms, you will also find a rich breakfast based on typical local products.
- DAY 3
Our experience dedicated to the wines and flavors of the Canavese ends in Caluso with a walk through the vineyards along “I poggi dell’Erbaluce”; an itinerary of 8 km, easy to travel, which will lead you to discover the site of Castellazzo, with the ruins of the medieval fortress dating back to the 13th century, and a series of very suggestive panoramic views, ranging between Monviso, Superga, the Canavese Alps and Biellesi, up to embrace the Serra Morenica and Lake Candia.
Typical lunch at Hotel Erbaluce di Caluso, based on typical local dishes accompanied by local wines. The restaurant’s strong point is seasonal cuisine, combined with an excellent selection of labels representative of the Canavese and other Piedmontese wine areas.
Last stop on the trip to the Crosio Cellars in Caluso, to end with a taste of the excellent wines of the area.
Optional free visit to the historic center of Caluso where we recommend a stop at the Regional Wine Cellar of the Province of Turin in Caluso where you can enjoy a guided tasting of the wines of the Canavese and Turin area in the company of a sommelier, ranging between the Val di Susa, the Pinerolese and the Chierese.
