valchiusella: the secret valley
An Authentic Corner of Peace and Inspiration
It is not easy to describe this valley to you because … because it is surprising, unexpected, mysterious.
Even we Canaveseans, for quite some time, have considered it a bit marginal and so “closed”: perhaps it is no coincidence that the stream that runs through it is called Chiusella! Here you have to plan to go, you don’t pass there by chance; whether you decide to go up from Baldissero or from Strambinello, you immediately understand “the air that pulls”: so much nature, so much green, so much water, so much rock, so much biodiversity. Perhaps the very fact of being “closed” has preserved so much richness.
geological wonders
Bog and Moraine Lakes
The geo-morphology is particular because the two slopes are the product of different geological movements, and the one on the right, in particular, is but a piece of the gigantic work of the Balteo Glacier, which originated the great Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater; this is why it is characterized by moraine lakes and ancient peat bogs: clear evidence of this are those of Meugliano and Alice, which, in different seasons, offer striking views with blazing colors.
Tough people, the people of Valchiusella, who had to treasure the resources offered by the area.
Forests, Crags and Mines
Ancient Resources and Crafts
A land of miners since ancient times, with Brosso and Traversella as the focal points of mining. It is said that God forgot only one thing: gold! (meaning that all types of minerals are found underground). Mostly iron ores were extracted from the mines, with specimens of special interest displayed in the world’s best-known natural science museums.
A land of shepherds, of woodcutters, of artisans: still today cows are raised from whose milk cheeses with special flavors are produced, thanks to the herbs on which the animals feed. Indeed, an enormous biodiversity is present throughout the valley, well represented by the many wild edible herbs of which the expert “magistre” are custodians, so much so that they recognize them, educate in their discovery and teach how to use them in cooking.
