DESCRIZIONE ESPERIENZA
An excursion to discover an area where the works of art are the man-made “heroic” terraces dedicated to vine cultivation and culture.
The spectacular and varied route allows a close look at the territories characterized by terraced vineyards planted with vines, known as “heroic vineyards,” typical of these mountain areas, where, in order to increase the cultivable area, man built miles of dry stone walls and transported on their backs from the valley floor the land needed to cultivate these lands. In Roman times, the Via delle Gallie, built by Emperor Augustus to connect the Po Valley to Cisalpine Gaul, passed through Carema. The site of Carema was home to a military garrison, a customs house, to collect tolls on goods transported across the Alps. A mine for copper mining and a warehouse owned by Caius Sallustius Crispus, grandson of Sallust, were also located nearby.
