WATER SPORTS

Is your natural element “water”?

It may be hard to imagine, but the Canavese region, which obviously does not have a sea, has a wealth of waters on which to practice sports, some as a simple enthusiast, others as a competitive level player.

If paddles and oars are the extension of your arms, then Lake Candia, Lake Sirio and Dora Baltea are waiting for you. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for the water+wind combination, then the best places are Lake Viverone for sailing and the artificial lake of Ceresole Reale for windsurfing.
Are you a bit more adrenaline and just looking for the water match? Then we have to suggest rafting on the Dora Baltea and canyoning in the many streams that descend from the high peaks of the Orco and Soana Valleys.

We cannot forget those who, on the other hand, have a more peaceful and “passive” approach with the water: there are places to, simply, swim or take a boat ride to admire the surrounding landscape.

Canoeing and rowing

There are sites of absolute excellence for paddling or paddling, hotbeds of locally raised or adopted champions.

Lake Candia is a perfect race course for canoeing and rowing: ideal length, waters that only rarely ripple, floating docks and well-knit partnerships are the right ingredients for competitions at all levels. The same, if not more, can be said for canoe slalom, which, at the Ivrea facility on the Dora Baltea, is now a recurring venue for World Cup races as well as European and world championships.

So far we have tickled the competitive paddlers, but anyone who wants to do some paddling to enjoy the scenery and the pleasant feeling of gliding silently on the water can rent a canoe (or kayak) at Lake Candia, Lake Sirio, and Lake Viverone.

Swimming

In the summer season, a nice refreshing bath and a few strokes regenerate body and mind.

If you love running waters, even if they are a bit cold, we recommend choosing those of the Chiusella stream and those of the Orco stream. The former forms natural pools of crystal-clear water near the Fondo waterfall, in the Guje di Garavot and in those near the Rueglio bridge; the latter, on the other hand, offers many small beaches and pools in its lowland stretch, up to the confluence with the Po at Chivasso.

For those, however, who prefer still, warmer waters, the ideal setting is Lake Sirius, which is always swimmable and has some establishments equipped for families as well.

Boat rides

Prefer something more relaxing? A nice boat ride is for you: a rowboat can be rented on Lake Candia, or a pedal boat or sailboat on Lake Viverone. If even this is “too strenuous,” then you can board a motor boat, sit back and let the breeze caress your skin.

From March to September, on weekends, navigation on Lake Viverone is active: the boat is led by an effervescent “captainess” who, with her stories, entertains and intrigues boaters, letting them discover the surrounding beauty. On the other hand, from April to October, with scheduled outings, the electric boat on Lake Candia operates: in the company of a biologist, it is ideal for learning about the flora and fauna of the protected area.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing

It’s not for everyone to be able to surf at 1600 m. above sea level, in the heart of the Gran Paradiso Park! We are on Lake Ceresole Reale: on its decidedly cold waters (wetsuit is a must), you go out with 2 winds, one coming from the valley, constant and regular, and one coming from the north, colder and more intense: a decidedly unusual setting to experience in the 3 summer months to escape the heat of the cities.

Are you fond of wakeboarding and water skiing or are you a neophyte? Along the lowland stretch of the Dora Baltea there are small lakes equipped for wakeboarding; in Palazzo Canavese, on the calm spring waters of a lake, on the other hand, a professional water-skiing team awaits you; on Lake Viverone you will find both disciplines on a surface of quite a different extent, even if, at times, a little rippled.

Canyoning and rafting

You can have fun in groups with dinghy descents along the waters of the Dora Baltea: in the Canavese section, the river has no raging rapids, so we are talking about soft-rafting combined with naturalistic observation of the landscape. The ideal and most interesting route goes from Montalto Dora to Ivrea, where you can see the city of Roman origin from a somewhat unusual point of view.

To try your hand at canyoning, on the other hand, either you are an expert or it is better to be guided by professionals who will take you to the many ravines and crevices among the mountains of the Orco Valley from which high altitude waters descend, more or less impetuous: in particular, the Rio Vallungo is one of the most interesting canyoning routes, characterized by many taboga, jumps and rappels from different heights.
